Shahd Al Naami is a talented Gaza based writer, currently studying English literature & translation at the Islamic University of Gaza. I recently attended her powerful writing workshop, Threaded Memories: My Grandmother Speaks of Palestinian Embroidery. Shahd asked, What has the thobe witnessed?, as she taught of embroidery, the silent witness, the way it is documentation, how it weaves Palestinian identity & stories. Shahd is a powerful, moving young writer documenting the reality of Gaza, holding onto hope as resistance against the fascist colonial genocidal occupation. Shahd reminds us, ‘Hope, however fragile, is an act of resistance’.

This tatreez depicting a Palestinian gazelle & birds is being sold for $550 USD to benefit Shahd; please make this donation directly to Shahds GoFundMe. As Israel’s genocide & forced starvation of Gaza has worsened to stage 5 famine, & as the Amerikkkan aid sites have proven to be death traps, basic necessities have been increasingly difficult to obtain, & what is available in the markets have skyrocketed in price. In tandem with protesting & escalating to demand an end to the genocide, mutual aid is necessary to help keep the voices of Gaza alive.

This piece of hand stitched tatreez was made over a long period of time, through tears spent & dried, at demonstrations & events, at the beach where Gaza seemed to be on the horizon of the other side, & finally finished in the sky— our sky which pays for the fighter jets to drop bombs in Gazas skies.

If you are unable to purchase this piece of tatreez, do the following:

  • follow, share & amplify the writing of @Palestinian.Shahd on Instagram

  • Share this mutual aid call

  • Order a copy of Shahd’s zine

  • Donate $5 to her GFM

Frame is antique brass, with hardware to hang or for shelf display. Measures 7x5in.
